This charming animated film traces the colorful natural and cultural history of New Hampshire’s beloved Mount Monadnock. The film was made by the 7th grade students at Mountain Shadows School, Dublin, NH, under the direction of animator Karen Aqua and composer Ken Field, with support from The MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, NH. The students created and filmed all the artwork (using cutouts and flipbooks), and performed all the music, including some improvised sections. The film was one of a series of “Peterborough Projects” created in honor of the centennial of The MacDowell Colony. The following students made the film: Alison Siegmann, Annie Williams, August Bomer-Lawson, Brendan Palmer, Brian Spears, Caitlin Scott, Elizabeth Brighton, Jamie Pierce, Jillian Steele, Jonas Beymer, Lucy Beyer, Lucy Meyers, Meredith Wolpe, Satya Moses, Sierra Barden, and Zachary Silverman.
Director Karen Aqua has been making animated films since graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in 1976. Her award-winning films have screened worldwide, at festivals in Europe, Asia, North/South America, New Zealand, and Australia. Aqua has taught animation at Boston College and Emerson College, and at workshops and residencies around the U.S. She has been a juror for film festivals in Japan, U.S.A., and Canada, and has presented numerous one-person screenings of her work. Since1990 she has produced/directed/animated 22 segments for "Sesame Street."
Saxophonist/composer Ken Field is a member of the modern music ensemble, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, and leader of the improvisational brass band The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble. He has released several CDs of his solo music for layered saxophones.
Aqua and Field have collaborated on numerous animation/soundtrack projects since 1976. Their work together includes both independent films and freelance work for Sesame Street. Over the past ten years, they have conducted joint workshops and residencies around the U.S., creating films with students in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
